The American Overseas School of Rome is an independent, coeducational day school for students of all nationalities from prekindergarten through grade 12 and post-graduate year. The school was founded in 1947. The 2020-2021 school year comprises 2 semesters extending from September 2 through January 17 and from January 21 through June 16.

Organization: The school is governed by a 12-member Board of Trustees. The school is recognized as a nonprofit institution and is incorporated in the State of Delaware as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory, public or private schools. The school offers a thriving Advanced Placement Program and as well as the rigorous International Baccalaureate (Diploma Program). The school’s testing program includes the College Board’s PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement tests, as well as the full complement of IB exams in addition to MAP testing in the elementary and middle schools. Instruction is in English. French, Spanish, and Italian are taught as foreign languages. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and was the first school to be granted an International Credential from the Middle States Association.

Faculty: In the 2020-2021 school year, there are 70 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, enrollment was 561 (PK-grade 5: 215 and grades 6-12 and PG: 346).

Facilities: The 6.3-acre suburban campus includes a central quadrangle shaded by umbrella pines and surrounded by lawns, shrubs, and flowering plants, supplemented by multiple playgrounds and play spaces. Seven separate buildings and the grounds include 55 classrooms, 4 science laboratories, 3 computer laboratories, a newly refurbished gymnasium, a state of the art design lab, a cafeteria/auditorium, a health clinic, 2 libraries, an outdoor Roman amphitheater, tennis and basketball courts, and soccer and softball fields. There is a 1-to-1 laptop program for students in grades 4 through 7, with iPads in the lower elementary and coding and programming courses in the high school.

Finances: For the 2020-2021 school year, about 97% of the school’s income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK3: $10,959; PK4: $10,959 ; K: $15,276 ; grades 1-3: $18,264 ; grades 4-5: $19,814; grades 6-8: $22,415 ; grades 9-10: $25,017 ; grade 11: $25,902 ; grade 12-13 returning student: $27,230 and grade 12-13 new student: $28,614 . The school also charges a one-time capital assessment fee of $6,088 per family, a one-time registration fee of $885 per student, and transportation fees of $3,542 (optional). Financial aid is available in all grades for all nationalities.
