The American School of Milan is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from early childhood through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1962. The 2020-2021 school year comprises two semesters extending from September 1st to January 22nd and from January 25th to June 17th.
Organization: The school is governed by a 12-member board of trustees, elected for three-year terms by the Association of the American School of Milan. Membership in the association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The school is formally organized as a nonprofit association.
Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. college-preparatory, independent schools and includes the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. ASM is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Elementary students make continuous academic, social, and emotional progress in a collaborative environment and have specials that include Italian instruction, science lab, art, music, PE, and library visits. Elementary students utilize iPads, while laptop computers are used in grades 6-12. The school is the testing center in Northern Italy for the College Board. The testing program includes SAT Reasoning and Subject, SSAT and PSAT. Instruction is in English. The academic program includes an extensive interscholastic program, film, music, digital photography, robotics, computer science, TED-ED public speaking, student government, Model United Nations, and lifetime sports instruction. Nearly 100% of the graduates go on to universities. The elementary and secondary schools were reaccredited in 2016 by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Faculty: In the 2020-2021 school year, there are 104 full-time faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, enrollment was 822 (EC1-12).
Facilities: The nine-acre campus has three main, interconnected, two-story buildings. There are three learning divisions: early childhood (preschool-PK), elementary school (K-grade 5), and upper school (grades 6-12). The self-contained campus has a film studio, a well-equipped library/media center, 70+ classrooms, nine science laboratories, two science preparatory laboratories, four music rooms and four soundproofed practice rooms, two art suites and an IB art laboratory, a renovated cafeteria, a totally new 500-seat auditorium, two double gymnasiums, a dance studio, a climbing/bouldering wall, a weight room, a soccer field, an outdoor tennis court, basketball courts, and an elementary and early years playground.
Finances: In the 2020-2021 school year, about 95 percent of the school’s income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Preschool/EC1: $15,590; PK/EC2: $15,590; KG, grades1- 2: $18,800; grades 3-5: $20,590; grades 6-8: $22,970; grades 9-10: $24,750; grade 11: $26,300; and grade 12: $26,660. The school also charges a one-time admission fee of $5,950; a registration fee of $1,600; a building and maintenance fee of $2,680 for the first 2 years in attendance at the school and $1,490 every year from the 3rd year to 6th year; and transportation fees of $3,390 (Milan and suburbs) and $4,580 (Arese).
