The following is attributable to Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus:

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 26. The Secretary extended congratulations to the people of Ukraine on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24, and emphasized that the United States will continue to stand with the Ukrainian people in order to advance the rule of law, foster economic growth, attract foreign investment, and eliminate endemic corruption that constrains Ukraine’s potential. Secretary Pompeo raised U.S. concerns regarding malign PRC investment in Ukraine, including Beijing’s efforts to acquire the Motor Sich engine manufacturer. Secretary Pompeo and President Zelenskyy also discussed developments in Belarus, Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19, achieving a diplomatic resolution to Russia’s aggression in eastern Ukraine, and restoring Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity in Crimea.
