The American International School Vienna (AISV) is an independent, college-preparatory, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. AISV was founded in 1959. The academic year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August through mid-January and from mid-January to the beginning of June.
Organization: The school is governed by a 10-member Executive Board, eight of whom are elected by the Parents’ Association that sponsors the school, one who is appointed by the U.S. Ambassador, and the Director (ex-officio). Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The school is incorporated under Austrian law and is affiliated with the Office of Overseas Schools, U.S. Department of State.
Curriculum: The curriculum is similar to U.S. college-preparatory, private, independent schools. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is offered in grades 11 and 12. A few supplementary Advanced Placement courses and an Austrian Matura equivalency program may be offered. The school’s testing program includes the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), PSAT, SAT, and ACT Tests. Instruction is in English. German is required through grade 9, and French and Spanish are offered as electives beginning in grade 6. The school can accommodate mild learning disabilities. Resource support is provided on a limited basis, and applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools. The school is also recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Education.
Faculty: In the 2020-2021 school year, there are 103 faculty members.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, enrollment was 810 (PK-grade 5: 330; grades 6-8: 204; and grades 9-12, 276).
Facilities: Interconnected buildings house the three school divisions, consisting of 71 classrooms, two libraries, seven laboratories, two gymnasia, a sports hall, a cafeteria, and a theater. The campus is sited on 15 acres. An all-weather soccer field, an elementary playground, and an outdoor classroom are among the outdoor facilities. The middle school houses spacious, well-lit art rooms.
Finances: For the 2020-2021 school year, about 99% of the school’s income is derived from school tuition and fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: € 11,789; full-day K-grade 5: € 18,408; grades 6-8: € 20,426; grades 9-10: € 21,245; and grades 11-12: € 21,560. The school also charges an application fee of € 600 payable on first enrollment in the school; an enrollment fee of € 3,000; a capital assessment fee for new students of € 6,000 and for returning students (students progressing within AIS from one grade to the next) a fee of € 1,000; an optional bus transportation fee of € 2,150 round trip; and a lunch fee ranging from € 1,025.28 to € 1,145.43.
